"Once Upon a Time... in Concert" final weeks before of recordings

Rubén Gallardo is in the final stages of preparing for "Once Upon a Time... in Concert", fine-tuning every detail and ensuring that each musical arrangement sounds truly "cinematic."

Last weekend, we had the privilege of visiting him in his studio, where he gave us an exclusive preview of what's to come, and we were simply blown away.

Although everything remains confidential for now, we managed to sit down with Rubén for a brief interview, where he shared some thoughts about this ambitious project. Here it is!

Rubén, tell us how the idea for "Once Upon a Time... in Concert" came about. What inspired you to be part of this project?

This concert has been a dream in the making for quite some time, starting late last year. I've always had a special connection with Disney films, and being able to recreate that magic through music excites me deeply. When Carlos Díaz, director of NDS Productions, presented the idea to me, I knew right away that I wanted to be a part of it. It's a unique opportunity to pay tribute to soundtracks that have touched entire generations, and to be able to add my own creative touch is truly a privilege.

How was the song selection process? What criteria did you use to choose the most iconic tracks?

The selection process was collaborative and very exciting. We wanted the concert to capture the essence of the most beloved films, the ones that have accompanied both children and adults over the years. We made sure to include universal songs that evoke memories, but we also wanted to add some surprises to keep the repertoire fresh. The goal was to strike a balance between the classic and the new, while always maintaining Disney's unmistakable magic.

We know you did the musical arrangements for the concert. What challenges did you face in adapting the original music for this live format?

The biggest challenge was respecting the identity of the original compositions while also bringing something new to the table. Disney soundtracks are full of intricate details and nuances, and adapting them for a live format requires a lot of care. My goal was to create arrangements that maintained the original magic, but with a personal touch that would surprise the audience.

In addition to the classics, you've mentioned that there will be some original surprises in the concert. Can you give us a hint about them?

Without giving too much away, I can say that we’ve prepared some original pieces that complement the spirit of the classic songs. These surprises offer something new even for the most devoted Disney fans. The arrangements have a fresh feel while still respecting the fantasy and essence that characterize this world. I’m confident that both those who grew up with Disney and the new generations will enjoy them.

You’re working on other projects besides "Once Upon a Time... in Concert". How do you manage the pressure of juggling multiple projects at once?

It’s a challenge, but at the same time, it’s what I love to do. The key lies in organization and the passion I have for music. Each project has its own pace and dynamic, so I try to balance them and give each the attention it deserves. Although the projects are very different, I feel fortunate to work on such diverse and exciting things. In the end, all the hard work is worth it when you see the impact it has on the audience.

What do you hope the audience will take away from this concert?

My greatest hope is that the audience will completely immerse themselves in the experience and relive the magic that Disney has created over the years. It’s a risky project because the songs won’t sound exactly as they did in the movies. I’ve modified the scores, adding instruments and arrangements that weren’t in the original versions, bringing my own signature to these songs. I want the concert to offer something new while still respecting the magical essence we all know. It’s an invitation to dream, to share memories with new generations, and to enjoy together as a family. I hope they leave the theater with smiles on their faces and their hearts full of magic.

Finally, Rubén, what’s next for you after this concert? Any upcoming projects you can share with us?

This concert is just the beginning of many exciting things to come. I’m already working on several soundtracks, exploring different genres and styles. There are also surprises on the way that will mark a new direction in my career. All I can say for now is that I’m always looking for new challenges and opportunities to keep creating. Music is my driving force, and being able to share it with my followers is the greatest gift I can give.
